QR types

24 content types, one generator

A QR code is just encoded text — what makes one useful is the format that text follows. Pick a type and you get the right form, correct encoding, and a live preview of the exact pattern that will be printed.

Files & media

Point at something you upload to QrZeo storage. Swap the file and every printed code follows it.

PDF

Link to a PDF. Works as a static code, or dynamic so you can re-point it later.

Video

Play a video. Works as a static code, or dynamic so you can re-point it later.

Static or dynamic
Images

Photo gallery. Works as a static code, or dynamic so you can re-point it later.

Static or dynamic
MP3

Play audio. Works as a static code, or dynamic so you can re-point it later.

Static or dynamic

Contact & identity

Save a contact, join a network or start a message. These carry their data directly, so they work with no internet connection.

vCard

Share a contact. The data is carried in the pattern itself, so this type is always static.

Static only
vCard Plus

Contact page + card. The data is carried in the pattern itself, so this type is always static.

Static only
Wi-Fi

Join a network. The data is carried in the pattern itself, so this type is always static.

Phone

Tap to call. Works as a static code, or dynamic so you can re-point it later.

Static or dynamic
SMS

Start a text. Works as a static code, or dynamic so you can re-point it later.

Compose an email. Works as a static code, or dynamic so you can re-point it later.

Static or dynamic

Static or dynamic

Collecting a response

Codes whose job is to get something back from the person scanning — a rating, a comment or a payment.

Static or dynamic
Design

Style it without breaking it

Every style below is a real, scannable code. Module shape, colour and a centre badge are all safe within limits — and the generator raises the error-correction level for you when a badge would otherwise eat too much data.

Q
Square
Maximum contrast, scans fastest on cheap cameras
Q
Rounded
Softer edges, still comfortably within tolerance
Q
Dots
Most distinctive — pair with high error correction

One rule the generator will not let you break: dark modules on a light background. Inverting the contrast produces a code most phone cameras refuse to read, and you would only find out after the print run.

FAQ

Questions about QR types

Which content type should I pick for a link?
Website, unless a more specific type matches what you are linking to — Menu, PDF, Video, Event and the rest all produce a link, but they pre-fill the right form and label the code sensibly in your workspace. The scanned result is identical; the difference is how findable the code is six months later.
What is the difference between vCard and vCard Plus?
A plain vCard encodes the contact details directly, so the phone saves the contact with no internet connection. vCard Plus points at a hosted contact page — which means it can be dynamic, can carry more than a contact card fits, and can be updated when someone changes role.
Do Wi-Fi QR codes work on every phone?
iOS and Android have both supported the WIFI: format natively in the camera for years. Older devices may need a QR app. The password is encoded in plain text inside the code, so treat a printed Wi-Fi code as equivalent to writing the password on the wall — fine for a guest network, not for your main one.
Can I put a logo in the middle without breaking the code?
Yes, within limits. The badge covers roughly 6% of the symbol, which error correction can reconstruct — QrZeo raises the correction level automatically when you switch the badge on. Adding a much larger logo by hand afterwards in a design tool is where codes usually stop scanning.
Which module shape scans most reliably?
Square, marginally — it maximises the contrast area of each module. Rounded and dots are both comfortably within scanner tolerance at normal print sizes; if you are printing very small or on an uneven surface, prefer square and raise the error correction.
Can I use light modules on a dark background?
QrZeo does not allow it, deliberately. Many phone cameras will not read an inverted code, and you would discover the problem after printing rather than before. If you need a dark design, keep the code itself dark-on-light and place it on a light panel.
Should I download PNG or SVG?
SVG for anything going to print — it is a vector, so it scales to a billboard with no loss. PNG for screens, email and slide decks, where a fixed-resolution image is simpler to handle.
Why does my code look denser than another one?
More data means more modules. A long URL with campaign parameters can push a code two or three versions higher than a short link carrying the same meaning, which is a practical argument for dynamic codes: qrz.eo/spring encodes far smaller than the URL it stands for.
