What QR Analytics Can and Cannot Tell You

Scan data answers some questions precisely, gestures at others, and cannot answer a third category at all. Knowing which is which keeps you from over-reading the numbers.

Where the numbers come from

Every scan of a dynamic code passes through the redirect before reaching the destination. That request is what gets counted, along with what any web server sees: a timestamp, a coarse device class, and a country or city derived from the connection.

This is also why static codes have no analytics anywhere, from any provider. There is no request in the middle to observe. If somebody offers you tracking on a static code, something else is going on.

Questions it answers well

The redirect is a precise instrument for a narrow set of questions.

  • How many people reached the destination, and when — including the shape of the curve, not just the total.
  • Which placement performed better, provided each placement has its own code.
  • Which platform your audience is on, which decides whether to lead with the App Store or Play link.
  • Which countries and cities scans came from, which informs what to translate next.

Questions it cannot answer

A scan means someone reached the destination. It does not mean they read it, and it certainly does not mean they bought anything — that is your site analytics, not ours.

Nor does it tell you how many people saw the code and ignored it, whether the same person scanned twice, or who any of them are. Scan records hold no personal identifiers, and no profile is built across codes.

Designing so the numbers mean something

The single most useful decision is one code per placement. It costs nothing and converts an unanswerable question into an arithmetic one.

Beyond that, look at the daily trend rather than the lifetime total — a code that stopped being scanned three weeks ago is invisible in a cumulative number. And if you want to test two destinations, split traffic behind one printed code rather than printing two variants and hoping the distribution was even.

FAQ

Questions from this article

Is scan volume ever billed?
Not on any QrZeo plan. A code that unexpectedly goes viral costs the same as one nobody scans.
Can I export the raw events?
Yes — GET /v1/qr/:id/scans returns paginated events with device and geo fields for your own analysis.
